My Work as a Volunteer Nurse Essay -- Contribution to My Community Serv

My community service work at County Hospital is to care for the rudimentary needs of each patient. My goals are to provide inspiration during the healing process, teach kindness and compassion, and discover my own abilities for empathy. "Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes it is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, "I'll try again to tomorrow (Mary Anne Radmacher)." My hope as a volunteer is to help each patient find that voice, find that courage to go forward. It is easier for patients find that voice when they know that somebody cares. Many patients are exhausted and unable to perform the simple rudimentary tasks that are part of a normal daily routine. As a volunteer, most of my time is spent assisting patients in hygienic tasks as well as reliving physical pain by helping someone change positions or rubbing a patient's back. I realize that this might not sound appealing to some, but it means everything to the patient and that's what is important. I believe that with every experience, there is a lesson to be learned.
